President's Message

Last week the rain didn’t dampen spirits or thirsts. Thank you John for organising our pre-dinner drinks. The meeting, which followed, continued with the almost festive mood resulting in some well-deserved fines and Jim’s discovery of different table dynamics.

On a more serious note, Phil filled us in on the District Assembly, which he and Kate attended. He then showed us a little more about Club Runner. He has spent an extraordinary amount of time uploading our club information into Club Runner and is succeeding in educating us on its merits with regular updates at meetings.

At the Board meeting which followed, prospective recipients of donations were discussed. These proposals will be put to members tonight.

RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) was successfully run again last Thursday and Friday with around 370 students attending from 3 High Schools. Well done Ken with the help of Marilyn, Dennis, Bob and members of the Rotary Club of Corrimal.

Emily at Green Connect sent photos of the animals loaded into the trailer and said it is perfect. To use the remainder of the grant money, they are looking to have a tarpaulin made. The signs for the sides are finished and more photos will be taken when installed.

Now tonight we are very much looking forward to hearing some humorous stories from retired Celebrant Barbara Dent.

Cheers,
President Rose

Last week's meeting notes - Scribe - Rose Pope

- Sergeant Dennis managed to open the meeting despite all the animated discussions.

- As it was Volunteer Week, for the Reflection, Rose pointed out that without volunteers for our fundraising efforts we wouldn’t function as a service club. Without this income, we wouldn’t be able to continue to help the needy - those experiencing flood, drought, domestic violence, homelessness etc. She proposed a toast to all volunteers in Rotary and elsewhere.

- Ray thought about the young Austrian who won Eurovision this year who also sings at the Vienna State Opera. So he proposed a toast to the Rotary Club of Vienna which appealed to him because it appears they party a lot.

- Noel reported on the takings at the Charles and said the Ride4Rotary was a huge success raising over $50,000 for SYFS and our club raised $754.

- Secretary Kerrie passed on a request for volunteers for the City to Surf 10 th August and the Sydney Marathon 31st August for which each volunteer would receive $100 and $80 respectively.

- Patrick updated us on Citizenship Night 11th June.

- Marilyn requested information on intended attendance on Citizenship Night and if
members could volunteer to look after a conferee.

- Ken reminded members that RYDA was running both Thursday and Friday with about 370 High School students participating. He thanked those who’d volunteered to help.

- Phil explained the information given on the District budget at the District Assembly
including proposals concerning the number of President meetings and the scale of the
Conference.

- Phil then showed members the updated format of Club Runner where he has uploaded a lot more club information.

- Rose thanked Phil for the many hours and days he’s been spending on our website.

- The wine raffle was happily won by Mal and Michael.

- The meeting closed at 7.30pm

A Little about Barbara Dent

Barbara has enjoyed some "past lives" which have contributed to her ‘Celebrancy’ work over the years.
Barbara had her own business in professional promotions/compering/public speaking and organising
large functions and fashion shows etc. and she also worked in ‘voice-overs’ for cinema advertising.

Furthermore, Barbara co-owned a French perfumery and three beauty spa salons... that featured Christian Dior.

She officiated at thousands of weddings, baby name-giving ceremonies, and commitment ceremonies. Barbara now considers herself an expert on all things pertaining to marriage!

Barbara can also write...so that ensured a personally written ceremony for each couple. She has a great sense of humour, but always delivered a professional, legally correct, and happy wedding ceremony to all her couples... which is a great segue into the title of her presentation “Humorous Stories from a Retired Marriage Celebrant”.

RYDA was held this week

Red Shield Appeal - Saturday 31 May

Our club's annual Red Shield Appeal collecting is on again. We will be collecting on Saturday 31st May, at the netball courts, Fred Finch Park, Berkeley from 8AM to 4PM. If you can offer an hour or two to carry a collecting bucket around the courts, please contact Di North on 0429 774 363 or email dianne_north@bigpond.com
Last year we raised $1100 so let's see if we can beat it this year!
Adopt-a-Tree Project - Willowdene Environmental Site
On 20 June 2025 the Adopt-a-Tree project are having an open day on the Willowdene Environmental site where over 3,000 trees have been planted. On the day we will be planting some replacement trees and doing some maintenance like replacing tree guards.

We welcome all our supporters to come along and turn over some soil and ask questions to the WSIA environmental staff on what their vision is for the site and where to next?

It is important that you book -

The reason is we need to hire a bus to take you to the site from the Experience Centre 100 Eaton Road, Luddenham.  In addition, the team will be supplying a BBQ lunch.

Local News

An example of Rotary and the Lions working together for a worthy cause. With Milan is Greg Dombkins (Milan's former long-term neighbour) running the BBQ at the Lions' charity golf day at Calderwood golf club. The worthy recipients are the Salvation Army in their project to help eradicate domestic violence.
As an aside, Milan discovered that one Rotarian equals five Lions. 😉
