In 1985 Arthur Booth, a long-time member of our club, suggested our club approach Wollongong City Council for approval to plant trees on public land in Throsby Drive Wollongong. As a result of Arthur’s foresight, a mini forest is there today for the public to enjoy.

In 2020 Arthur suggested we again approach Council for approval to plant native vegetation under, and around, the trees. Approval was readily given in line with Council’s “Greening the City” program. Since that time, an on-going association between our Club, Council’s Parks and Gardens department and Wollongong Botanic Gardens has been in place.

Mulching commenced in Jan. 2021 followed by the first plantings the following April. It was then that the club’s labourers were reminded that plants need water. For a long time, members and friends have loaded vehicles with water containers of all sizes and helped our labour of love to survive. As the plants took hold, and grew thirstier during a long dry period, Council assisted by bringing large water tankers on site.

Over the last couple of years there have been a number of very social, and productive, days on site weeding, re-planting, removing rubbish, and cleaning up after a few destructive storms.

Volunteers are more than welcome to help out on pruning and clean up days. Great coffee and treats are usually provided once the hard work is complete.
