President's Message

A special thank you to our resident Radiologist, Dr Kevin Wanambiro, for his presentation on Modern Radiology, its techniques and analysis. It certainly was a very interesting and informative presentation that prompted many questions from our members.

As discussed over the past two weeks, our Charity Race Day planning is
underway with the Race Day Organising Committee now being formed.
Thank you to Annette, Rita, Kate, Janet, Rose & Jim for volunteering to
join the committee. Our first meeting will be on Thursday 5 February.
After going through the agreement with Kembla Grange at last week’s
meeting, no objection has been received, so the agreement will be
signed and returned at the week’s meeting.

The month of February will represent a period of change for our club
with our first social night on the 1st Wednesday of each month taking
place this week. Thank you, Bob Armessen, for organising the venue at
Woonona-Bulli RSL Club. Please check the club calendar in ClubRunner
for further details.

At our second meeting for the month, on 11 February, we will trial
conducting our meeting in full from 6:15am onwards and having or
usual Centro dinner after the meeting. This was in response to giving
members, and possibly new members, more flexibility with regard to
meeting length, financial commitment and possibly more time for
fellowship and socialising after the meeting. We will trial this on 11 Feb
and discuss what we thought at our meeting the following week.

A reminder that our next Bunnings BBQ is on Monday 9 February at
Kembla Grange. ClubRunner is open for volunteer registrations or
simply email Rose Pope with your availability. At present we need
people for the 10AM-12PM and 2PM-4PM time slots.

Have a great week everyone and I look forward to seeing you at this
week’s social.

Cheers,
President Phil

Last Week’s Meeting Minutes: Scribe – Ken Potter

Sergeant Jim opened the meeting at 6:15pm.

President Phil welcomed members and meals were appreciated.

Reflection: Australia.  International Toast from Patrick: to all Rotary Clubs.

President Phil reported the Regional Pilot programme has been extended. Last week’s Bunnings BBQ was neither the best nor the worst in terms of income. For anyone interested, funding for the Indigenous Scholar is up for grabs but needs to be finalised by 6 February. Other plans for the funds need to be explored. Rotary Race Day at Kembla Grange is booked for 12 September. Beneficiary is to be advised.

Our guest speaker was Kevin Wanambiro – on Radiology – Past, Present and Future.
Radiology is used in many fields, including x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound. The x-ray was first used (on his wife) on 22 December 1895 by William Roentgen.  It was then used on diamond mine workers to see if they were stealing diamonds.  A CT scan once took 20-30 minutes and was the focus of the 1979 Nobel Prize.  Ultrasound is used to monitor babies’ development, and mammography is used on women and men to detect breast cancer; also, for biopsies (to provide vision of where the biopsy needle is going) and for injecting pain relief into joints (spine or knee, for example).

Interestingly, the Doctor who orders the imaging is the client of the radiologist, not the patient. AI is having an influence on reporting.  At the airport, when your bags are x-rayed, the dose is low and the resulting image is much lower resolution than in medical imaging. The lead in the walls and the aprons in x-ray rooms absorbs the excess x-rays to protect staff and patients from excess exposure. When imaging is ordered, the benefits are always weighed up against the damage of excessive exposure. Other processes include nuclear medicine, the orthopantogram (xray of all someone’s teeth) and bone density testing.

Wine winners were Marilyn and Michael.

Sergeant's session was memorable, Bob's joke, not so much.

Thanks to all for attending - next week's social night is at Woonona-Bulli RSL at 6pm
