Presentation of Donations to PCYC Illawarra and Green Connect Farm
from the Illawarra Race Day Committee

President's Message

Another great speaker at last week's meeting. Tracey Gleaves from Recovery Camp gave a very detailed presentation on what Recovery Camp is all about and how it has helped people with lived experience of mental illness whilst supporting the training of mental health nurses through its registered program. It was easy to see that our support of Recovery Camp will be very beneficial to all concerned.

The presentation of donations from the Rotary Illawarra Charity Race Day were made on Saturday morning at North Beach Pavilion. We incorporated the presentation with DG Renga Rajan and wife Bharathi's 'Couple on a Mission' fund raising initiative. Attended by all four organising clubs, as well as Robert Servine from Green Connect Farm and both Dot Hennessy and Dan from PCYC, who were all very appreciative of the donation which will go to fund various programs in both organisations.

A reminder that this week is our Pre-Meeting drinks social starting at 5:30PM in the Centro CBD courtyard, followed by our regular meeting and board meeting. This week's meeting discussion will centre around the 2026/27 President's role and also our club meeting schedule. I would really encourage all members to participate in the discussion and look forward to seeing you all there.

Cheers,
President Phil

Last Week’s Meeting Minutes: Scribe – Helen Hasan
John (Sergeant) asked Phil to open the meeting and showed us his latest Joke book
purchase.
Our guest speaker, Tracey Gleaves, the Community Relations Officer from Recovery
Camp, was welcomed.

The Reflection from Helen focussed on her research in Information systems, giving
examples of how misinformation and disinformation adversely affect decisions being
made by organisations.
For the International toast, Kerrie chose a Rotary club in Belem, Brazil, where the
COP30 Climate Change conference is currently being held.

Tracey talked to us about the remarkable Recovery Camp organisation which began 13
years ago at the University of Wollongong to provide realistic placements for students
studying mental health. It has now held 53 camps and still growing, to include some in
overseas countries.
There are 3 groups at the camps: the facilitators (UOW staff and graduates), the “experts” (those who have lived experience of mental illness), and the university students doing their placements (work experience).
From all that Tracey told us and the great videos she showed of camps, we see what wonderful outcomes the programme has for all participants. As a club, we will look at ways to help.

Dennis reported good results from the activities at the Charles over the past 2 weeks.
Rose reported arrangements for the school visits coming up.
Phil mentioned the upcoming presentation of money made at the Annual Race Day
event on Saturday and the upcoming Walk against Domestic Violence.
Next week we have our regular monthly early start social meeting.

Tracey and Helen were wine winners.
John finished with a couple of jokes from his new book. The verdict is still out on
these.

 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
SOUTH PACIFIC ZONE 8 CONFERENCE

Around 500 people from Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific Island nations gathered
at the Twin Towns Conference Centre in Tweed Heads for the Rotary South Pacific Zone 8
Conference, held from 31 October to 2 November.

Special Guests were Rotary International President-Elect (RIPE) Olayinka Hakeem
Babalola from Nigeria and his wife, Preba and Rotary International CEO and General
Secretary John Hewko and his wife, Marga. Both delivered insightful addresses.

The conference featured a range of engaging speakers:

Jessica Reid, Chief of Staff to the President of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games Committee, shared behind-the-scenes planning for the Games.
Kirra Pendergast, social media expert, spoke about online safety and practical
precautions.
Michael McQueen, Change Strategist, author, and Rotarian, gave a thought-
provoking presentation on why people resist change—often due to fear of losing
familiarity, power, or dignity—and offered strategies to overcome this resistance.

Several new and ongoing Rotary initiatives were highlighted:

New Projects:
o Rocket Burn Barrel in Fiji, designed to eliminate plastics without pollution
o Snakebite prevention program in Papua New Guinea
o Rotary Falls Prevention in Australia, soon to launch with promotional
campaigns featuring Michael Caton, Allegra Spender, and Ita Buttrose

Updates:
o Australian Rotarians Against Malaria (ARAM)
o End Polio campaign
o Regionalisation progress

The next South Pacific Zone 8 Conference will take place at the Melbourne Convention
Centre from 27 October to 1 November 2026. The theme will be “People, Planet, Peace”.
All Rotarians are welcome to attend. Registrations are already open at
