Around 500 people from Australia, New Zealand, and many Pacific Island nations gathered
at the Twin Towns Conference Centre in Tweed Heads for the Rotary South Pacific Zone 8
Conference, held from 31 October to 2 November.
Special Guests were Rotary International President-Elect (RIPE) Olayinka Hakeem
Babalola from Nigeria and his wife, Preba and Rotary International CEO and General
Secretary John Hewko and his wife, Marga. Both delivered insightful addresses.
The conference featured a range of engaging speakers:
Jessica Reid, Chief of Staff to the President of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games Committee, shared behind-the-scenes planning for the Games.
Kirra Pendergast, social media expert, spoke about online safety and practical
precautions.
Michael McQueen, Change Strategist, author, and Rotarian, gave a thought-
provoking presentation on why people resist change—often due to fear of losing
familiarity, power, or dignity—and offered strategies to overcome this resistance.
Several new and ongoing Rotary initiatives were highlighted:
New Projects:
o Rocket Burn Barrel in Fiji, designed to eliminate plastics without pollution
o Snakebite prevention program in Papua New Guinea
o Rotary Falls Prevention in Australia, soon to launch with promotional
campaigns featuring Michael Caton, Allegra Spender, and Ita Buttrose
Updates:
o Australian Rotarians Against Malaria (ARAM)
o End Polio campaign
o Regionalisation progress
The next South Pacific Zone 8 Conference will take place at the Melbourne Convention
