President's Message

Pre-meeting drinks are always a great way to relax and have a chat with fellow members. Though a smaller group than usual, perhaps due to the weather and the Keith Urban concert at the WEC, all present enjoyed the conversation and slightly more abundant wine. Thank you, John Erickson, for organising this once again.

Our Charity Race Day is only 3 weeks away and we are still in need of race day ticket sales, wine bottles for the Wine Fridge Key Raffle and items suitable for the Silent Auction. If you can help with any of these, it would be much appreciated.

Our monthly board meeting was held immediately following the club meeting. Whilst we await the finalisation of the Club's Donations Program, it was decided the club would support:

- The 2025 Vocational Education & Training (VET) Awards.
- The 2025 Illawarra Primary & High School Citizenship Awards.
- Make funds available for a reconditioned motorised wheelchair for a local Figtree resident if required.

Our heartfelt sympathy is warmly extended to Rita & Roberto Giampieri upon the passing of Rita's sister Lina. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rita, Roberto and their family at this sad time. For those wishing to attend Lina's funeral, details are provided in the meeting minutes below.

Our guest speaker this week is Graham Lancaster whose presentation should be extremely interesting. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Cheers,
President Phil

Last Week’s Meeting Minutes: Scribe – Ros Yeoman

Sergeant John started the meeting asking Phil to welcome everyone to the 8th meeting of the year.

Bob’s International Toast
Just after 11.00 pm on this day in 1991 Estonia regained the freedom it had lost to the Soviet Union more than 5 decades earlier. That night Estonia voted for national independence. Latvia did the same on the same day. The Rotary Club of Tallinn is one of the country’s 20 clubs with approx. 600 members. Tallinn’s projects are very similar to ours. Their major fundraiser is an annual gala ball with ticket prices of 180 euro pp. A large proportion of income is used to support Ukrainian students in Estonia. A toast to the Rotary Clubs of Estonia on this day of celebration.

Ros's reflection was about an Indigenous Art exhibition currently at the NSW Art Gallery. It showcases art from a small town in Arnhem Land called Yirrkala. The art sells internationally for tens of thousands of dollars. The Yolngu people believe that everyone is an artist and that their art is a way of expressing and maintaining their culture.

Jim is heading overseas for a month. John will stand in for Jim with regards the Pride of Workmanship event organisation.

Rose standing in for Anne gave us the welfare report.
Sadly, Rita’s sister passed away last Sunday. The funeral will be held at 11.30AM next Tuesday 26th August at the Immaculate Conception Church at Unanderra. Contact Rose for further details regarding the funeral. Anne is organising flowers.

Dennis reported another amazing week for the Meat Raffle and the Joker draw - only 8 cards remaining.

Michael reported that Arthur is in Coledale Hospital. Arthur enjoys visitors and visiting hours are 8am -8pm. He will be there until a long-term placement can be found.

Ray is looking after the Imagination Library while Tom O’Toole is on leave. Ray commented on what a big job it is to administer.

President Phil raised the following:
The Green Connect fundraiser has been moved to Friday 10th October at the Master Builders Club. Cost $100 pp includes a 2-course dinner. Former Governor General David Hurley, Alison Burns MP and Paul Scully MP will be there. Tickets can be purchased via Moshtix. Phil suggested the club could put a table together.

The Domestic Violence Walk has been moved to 29th November. More details to come. Put it in your calendar.

Corrimal Rotary Trivia Night is Saturday 30th August. $15 to attend - bring nibbles and drinks, lots of prizes to be won. Table size is 8-10. If you would like to go the club is putting a table together. Contact Rose

Sydney Cove is looking for marshals for the Sydney Marathon 31 August. Marshals will earn $80 for your club and receive a free T-shirt and Jacket. If you are interested email Jackie Charlton jachaworthcharlton.gmail.com@clubrunner.emailASAP

Race Day numbers are up to 250 - but more people are required

BBQ Monday 25th August - volunteer required for 12-2 (Phil volunteered) and 2-4 (Dennis volunteered)

Winners of the wine raffle John and Bob. Unfortunately, Jim did not win once again.

These 2 gents are looking very happy with themselves.
