President's Message

A great turn out to last week's meeting and our AGM. Our Rotary Club is in good hands next year, thanks to the 4 willing members who will share the President's role; Bob Armessen, Barry Stevens, Annette Lavender and Janet Crankenthorp and also our Directors Ken Potter, Rose Pope, Barry Stevens, Annette Lavender and yours truly. It's wonderful that you've volunteered your time to these roles and it is very much appreciated by all members of the club.

Next year will see a change to our meeting schedule as outlined in last week's bulletin. Additionally, as a result of discussion at this week's meeting, John Erickson's suggestion of having our club meeting followed by dinner afterwards will be trialled for the first 2 meetings in February next year (11 & 18 Feb). We will discuss whether we wish to continue in that format during the 18 February meeting.

Volunteers are needed for our Bunnings BBQ at Kembla Grange on Monday 15 December. Volunteer registrations are now open on ClubRunner. Please direct all enquiries to Rose Pope, after she returns from holidays on 2 December.

A reminder that Kate Thomas is on the look out for sewing machines (preferably in working order) to support the Illawarra Multi-Cultural Service.  Please contact Kate directly if you can help out.

This will be my last message until the New Year as Ed & I venture off to the USA and Venezuela for a much needed holiday. We extend to all members and their families the very best wishes for the season and a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Cheers,
President Phil

Last Week’s Meeting Minutes: Scribe – Annette Lavender

Apologies from Rose.
Sergeant Ken opened the meeting at 18.18pm.
President Phil welcomed everyone to this, our 22nd meeting of the year.

Annette gave the Reflection on how our schooling is changing, especially in inner Parramatta where a new high school Arthur Phillip High has started. The students enter the multi storied building by swiping their key cards (no roll call here) and climbing the stairs to their designated floor level where all their classes are held. Teachers move between the classes not the students. Laptops are essential and the libraries are situated on each class level with only the books required for that year.

Ray gave the International Toast to the Rotary Club of Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada, as he and Jane will be travelling there soon.
Halifax Rotary club is very similar to West Wollongong Rotary ,in particular the age profile. The clubs in the district have a varied meeting schedule both weekly and fortnightly. Their key fundraising event is rib fest which is very food orientated.
They charge a small entry fee and the funds go to intellectual disability support including employment, life skills and individual mentoring to support personal development.

Kerry called to order the AGM and the minutes were accepted by Michael and Noel.
Noel explained the audited financial report kindly completed by Albert.
IMB Bank kindly awarded us a grant again.
Kerry outlined the shared President roster between Bob, Barry, Janet and Annette after Phil's term finishes end next year.
Helen announced the district grant has come through to support Women Illawarra in their support of women facing homelessness.
Phil discussed our new meeting format.
1st meeting in February will be a social night and the new fee will be $35.00 as a trial.
DV walk is this Saturday commencing at Fairy Meadow Surf Club and finishing at Stuart Park.
Phil and Ed wished all members a very happy Christmas and safe travels.

Michael and Barry were our lucky wine raffle winners.

Ken as usual gave a wonderful recital of Rudyard Kipling's poem IF.

Hopefully we will all catch up at our Christmas dinner with Santa and his Elf .

Meeting closed at 19.20pm.
